20 Water Tanks donated to Caye Caulker

On Thursday, January 8th a short ceremony was held in Caye Caulker Village for the official handing over of 20 Rotoplas Water Tanks. The donation was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Belize Rural South (BRS) People’s United Party (PUP) Standard Bearer, Andre Perez, and the business community.

Utility issues in Caye Caulker Village seem to finally be stabilizing after over a week of electrical and water shortages. The issue peaked on New Year’s Day, when for several hours, the island was without electrical power after days without running water.

Water and electricity crisis has Caye Caulker Village tourism industry and livelihoods in jeopardy

Caye Caulker Village began its New Year 2020 by struggling with shortages of water and electricity, which worsened on Monday, December 30th. With their tourism season in jeopardy due to water and electricity issues, islanders took to the streets to protest on Thursday, January 2nd, after days without a proper supply of either utilities. Both utility companies, Belize Water Services (BWS) and Belize Electricity Limited (BEL), continue to address the situation as best as they can, but power and water supply on the island is yet to be fully restored.

Caye Caulker Electrification Project to receive a $6.8 US million Loan

On Friday, October 4th, during the Sitting of the House of Representatives a $6.8 US million loan motion was presented for Caye Caulker Electrification Project. The loan, offered by the Caribbean Development Bank, is earmarked to assist Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) in reducing emissions and improve the reliability of the supply of electricity to Caye Caulker, with increased capacity to meet the projected demand.
