El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro

Carnaval de San Pedro is back

The traditional island celebration, ‘El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro,’ takes place February 18th through the 21st, with big parties, street dances (comparsas), and painting. The annual celebration will also include a Carnaval market day at the Honourable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex, where events like a cocktail competition will be held.

San Pedro House of Culture tentatively to re-open in 2023

While other Houses of Culture have re-opened across the country, the San Pedro House of Culture (SPHOC) remains closed. A National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) representative indicated that they expect the island’s venue for exhibits and traditional events to re-open. They anticipate this taking place early next year (January). In the meantime, the SPHOC’s building will be used by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) to host activities such as meetings.

San Pedranos celebrate annual carnaval with a market day

The traditional island celebration, 'El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro,' did not include big parties, street dances (comparsas), and painting because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of these usual activities lasting three days every year in February, the carnival spearheaded by The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) turned into a market day on Saturday, February 26th, with live performances, including a round of comparsas dances.

Pandemic changes the way San Pedranos celebrate carnaval

Compared to previous years, El Gran Carnaval de San Pedro was celebrated this year with far less fanfare. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no street comparsas or painting in downtown San Pedro and no beach parties associated with the anticipated annual festivity. However, the traditional event was privately celebrated, and those fond of the comparsas were still able to enjoy them virtually during the three-night celebration from the 14th to the 16th of February.
