Fires destroy homes in San Pedro; victims need help

Three fires in one week have left families across San Pedro Town without homes and belongings. The first occurred in San Pedrito on Monday, June 19th, with a second fire within the DFC area on Thursday, June 22nd. The third blaze was reported in San Mateo on Saturday, June 24th. Local organizations have helped the fire victims, but more assistance is needed. The fire victims in San Pedrito can be assisted by calling 629-4176, while those from the second fire can contact Mirella Bacab at 628-9628 and 637-2247; or deposits can be made to her Atlantic Bank Account, Mirella Bacab, #211874774. Those affected in San Mateo can be assisted by contacting Leticia Chimilio at 639-0266.

Airborne dust affecting residents living along unpaved streets; motorists asked to slow down

As the dry season continues, residents across the subdivisions around San Pedro Town are experiencing issues with the excess airborne dust caused by motorists and large trucks. Those living along the main unpaved streets are the most affected, and they are appealing to the authorities to water the dusty roads as done in the past routinely. While the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) has taken advantage of the dry period to continue rehabilitating streets, they are aware of the situation. They ask those affected to call their offices at 226-2198 so they can prioritize and better address the issue. At the same time, motorists are asked to be considerate and avoid speeding in residential areas.

The task of addressing island street conditions

The San Pedro Town Council has started 2023 with its campaign to address the street conditions across the subdivisions. Many of the unpaved streets in subdivisions like DFC, Escalante, San Pedrito, San Juan, San Marcos, and San Mateo, to name a few, remain in poor condition. The SPTC say they will start getting more material to continue the work and repair as many streets as possible.

The rainy season brings an increase in mosquitoes and with it, vector-borne diseases like Dengue or Zika. In an attempt to raise awareness to keep residential and public areas clean and free of mosquito breeding grounds, members of the Belize Red Cross San Pedro Branch (BRCSPB) conducted a community clean-up at the entrance of the San Mateo Sub-division on Monday, September 30th.

BWSL installing new pipe system to improve San Mateo’s water supply

Residents in the San Mateo Sub-division, north of San Pedro Town, will soon see an upgrade in their water distribution system after Belize Water Services Limited (BWSL) completes work in the area replacing the old pipe system.

Minor charged with Reinery Garcia’s murder

A minor has been charged with the murder of 25-year-old Honduran National Reniery Adalid Figueroa Garcia, who was shot and killed on Thursday, April 26th. Along with the minor, the San Pedro Police have another person in custody who is presently being investigated as an accomplice to the crime.
