BNTU Stages Demonstration in Belmopan City
Hundreds of union members staged a demonstration in Belmopan on Friday, May 9th, led by the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU), alongside the Public Service Union and other allied organizations. The protest marked the first phase of a planned series of industrial actions aimed at pressuring the Government of Belize (GOB) to implement long-standing salary and wage reforms.

San Pedro Celebrates Moms in Style: Bretha Graniel awarded Mother of the Year
On Saturday, May 10th, the San Pedro Town Council organized a spectacular Mother’s Day Extravaganza at the Honorable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex (Saca Chispas Field). The event transformed the venue into a lively hub filled with love, laughter, and entertainment, running from 6PM until 3 AM. The community came together to celebrate and honor the amazing mothers. A highlight of the evening was the award for Mother of the Year, which was presented to Bertha Graniel.

Ciaran O’Mordha has assumed the role of executive director at ACES Wildlife Rescue in San Pedro Town. He brings a lifelong passion for wildlife and a diverse background in conservation to the island's only multi-species rescue and rehabilitation facility.

Fourth Annual Kentucky Derby benefit for Saga Humane Society breaks fundraising record
The world-renowned horse race, the Kentucky Derby, was the theme for the fourth annual benefit for Saga Humane Society on Saturday, May 3rd. Hosted by Kristen Newton, owner of Someplace South CafeBar, where the anticipated event was held, the occasion was manned by numerous Saga volunteers and featured a diverse selection of silent auction items, raffle prizes, and entertaining competitions.

Empow.Her and SHINE celebrate women during successful gala
On Thursday, May 1st, the Hidden Treasure Restaurant hosted an unforgettable evening dedicated to inspiring, connecting, and empowering women. Under the theme “Empowering Her to Bloom,” the gala raised funds and featured a remarkable lineup of female guest speakers who have made significant contributions to the island community and continue to inspire others to pursue their dreams. The event was organized by local non-profit organizations Empow.Her (Empowering Her), Est/Her (Establishing Her for More), which supports abused or at-risk women, and SHINE (Shaping Healthy Identities through Nurturing and Empowerment).

Ambergris Caye Masonic Lodge celebrates a decade of service
On Saturday, May 3rd, the Ambergris Caye Masonic Lodge (ACML) No. 5 celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special event at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium. Members of Masonic Lodges from across the country and the Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Campeche gathered in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, for a social evening.

BEL participates in 2025 Caribbean Electric Utilities Services Corporation Lineworkers Rodeo
Belize was represented at the 2025 Caribbean Electric Utilities Services Corporation (CARILEC) Lineworkers Rodeo, which took place in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) from April 25th to 27th. The country was represented by three power line technicians from Belize Electricity Limited: George Neal, Kareem Lopez, and Jeser Gonzalez. They competed against power line technicians from across the Caribbean. Ultimately, the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) emerged as the top winner in both the Apprentice and Experienced Lineworker categories.

Caye Caulker Lions Branch Club officially installed
Caye Caulker, San Pedro’s sister island, now has a Lions Club. The Caye Caulker Lions Branch Club was officially inaugurated on Saturday, April 26th, at the San Pedro Lions Den. This special occasion included the confirmation of 16 new members from Caye Caulker and the installation of the board of directors.
