SPTC supports the development of a family-friendly downtown area

The relocation of the San Pedro Belize Express water taxi from the municipal dock in Central Park to a new facility south of town in early January marks a significant transformation for downtown San Pedro, particularly in the Central Park area. This move has already reduced congestion in the town center, making it more accessible and family-friendly, aligning with San Pedro's designation as a child-friendly municipality.

BEL reassures San Pedro Town and Caye Caulker have reliable energy supply

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has significantly improved power reliability in San Pedro Town, particularly with the commissioning of a Mobile Gas Turbine in September 2024. This turbine, which has a maximum capacity of 21 megawatts, is designed to meet the rising energy demands of the island community, which has been experiencing unprecedented power needs due to increased tourism and population growth.

Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye and San Pedro Lions Club further assist Fire Victims

The Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye and the San Pedro Lions Club provided additional monetary assistance to the fire victims on December 29th. On Wednesday, February 19th, the clubs met briefly with the recipients at the Lions Den on Barrier Reef Drive. Those in attendance received financial contributions to support their recovery following losses.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony held for Improvements at John Greif II Municipal Airport

On Wednesday, February 19th, a ceremony was held in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, to officially unveil the upgrades to the John Greif II Municipal Airport. The Belize Airports Authority (BAA) has made significant improvements to one of Belize’s busiest airports, including thermoplastic markings, new taxiway lights, a new holding bay area, modern LED runway lights, and complete resurfacing of the runway. These enhancements are expected to make take-offs and landings safer and facilitate smoother and more efficient aircraft movement.

Castillo’s Hardware celebrates 25 years of service to the San Pedro community

San Pedro’s well-known business, Castillo’s Do It Best Hardware Ltd, celebrated its 25th anniversary on Wednesday, February 19th. To commemorate this milestone, the management hosted an appreciation event, which included a raffle where 25 lucky customers could win $1,000 each, alongside other tokens of appreciation.

SPHS crowns new Reina and Rey de la Banda

The San Pedro High School (SPHS) held the second edition of its annual Reina de la Banda Pageant on Saturday, February 18th, at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium. This year, a king was crowned alongside the queen for the first time. The event, a fundraiser for the school’s marching band, featured six contestants competing for the esteemed titles. After a thrilling night, Brier Wade was crowned Reina de la Banda, while Ernesto Bernardez became the first Rey de la Banda.

San Pedro Lions Club hosts second annual Childhood Cancer Walk

The San Pedro Lions Club, primary school students, and island residents participated in the second annual Childhood Cancer Walk on Saturday, February 15th. This event, part of a global campaign, saw a significant turnout and was aimed at raising awareness about childhood cancer and its unique challenges, not just locally but internationally.

Letter to the Editor: A glowing recommendation for Dr. Gabourel

To anyone being advised to have a colonoscopy or upper endoscopy – I highly recommend Hope Hospital and Dr. Gabourel. I have told all my friends of my experience and want to share with others, who might not be aware of the availability of this service in San Pedro for likely less than the airfare to fly back north, get a rental car and/or hotel rooms while you take care of medical business.
