New Justices of the Peace appointed for Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye

A new group of Justices of the Peace (JPs) was sworn in on Saturday, February 8th, in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the San Pedro Lions Den on Barrier Reef Drive, where several members were also named Senior JPs. Belize's Attorney General, Anthony Sylvestre, conducted the ceremony, which appointed JPs for both Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.

Disaster Risk Management Forum: Empowering Young People for Resilience on the Island

On February 7, 2025, the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), in partnership with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Belize and the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF), hosted its second Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Youth Forum at San Pedro High School. The forum brought together young people to discuss disaster preparedness, response, and climate resilience, empowering the next generation with the knowledge and skills needed to build a safer and more resilient Belize.

Saga’s Annual Benefit Concert 2025: Another Hit!

San Pedro residents and visitors gathered at the Palapa Bar and Grill on Thursday, February 6th, to celebrate the birthday of award-winning country singer-songwriter Kelly McGuire. The event featured a concert by McGuire to raise funds for the San Pedro Saga Humane Society, complete with raffles, live auctions, and lively music for dancing.

SPTC begins issuing tickets for improper garbage disposal

San Pedro Town is ramping up its efforts to tackle improper waste disposal through a comprehensive ticketing system targeted at businesses and, soon, residences. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to improve waste management enforcement and encourage community participation in cleanup efforts.

San Pedro to enforce town ordinance that restricts pets in restaurants

A regulation restricting pets in restaurants in San Pedro Town has gone unenforced for years. Although the rule is not new, the Public Health Department on the island is now enforcing it more strictly, sparking mixed opinions among residents. The department has stated that animals should not be permitted in restaurants to ensure health and food safety for everyone. While some locals support this enforcement, others believe there are safe alternatives that would allow pets to accompany their owners in restaurants.

San Pedro Town to establish sister-city relationship with Clearwater City

Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez has returned to the island after a business trip to Clearwater City, Florida, USA. Mayor Nuñez and his team are working to establish a sister-city relationship with Clearwater. This partnership will benefit both municipalities through educational, cultural, and tourism exchanges.

BEL connecting Caye Caulker to National Grid via Submarine Cable

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is developing a project to connect Caye Caulker to San Pedro through a 34.5 kV submarine transmission line. This connection will integrate Caye Caulker into the national electricity grid, and the project is expected to be completed by July 2025.

Emergency Blood Drive successfully collected dozens of pints of blood

On Saturday, February 1st, many residents of San Pedro answered the call to assist with an emergency blood drive for islander Maria Kumul. The event was held at the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, where nearly 50 individuals showed up to donate. After evaluations, 36 pints of blood were successfully collected.
