Mayor Wally now Serves on the executive committee of the Mayors’ Association
On Thursday, March 28th, San Pedro Town's Mayor Gualberto "Wally" Nunez was elected as the secretary of the new executive committee of the Belize Mayors' Association from 2024 to 2025. The new executive body includes Corozal Town's Mayor, Rigoberto Vello, as president, Orange Walk Town's Mayor, Ladrick Sheppard as vice president, and Belize City's Mayor, Bernard Wagner as treasurer.

SPTC hosts successful Business Expo; 12 island women recognized for their hard work
On Saturday, March 30th, at 6:30 PM, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) hosted a Women’s Business Expo at the Honorable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex. The event promoted local women-owned businesses on the island, attracting many shoppers to view the work and creativity of the featured companies, which offered great deals on various products, food, and drinks. The fair included local entertainment, a fashion show, and an award ceremony celebrating the end of Women’s Month.

This letter is to announce that Saga Humane Society is once again on the fundraising trail. To assist us, the crew at Someplace South is holding their 3rd Annual Kentucky Derby Benefit Fundraiser! This event will take place on Saturday, May 4th from 12PM-5PM.
As you may know, construction has begun on our new facility following the renovation of the “Fort Dog” kennels.

With an anticipated increase in traffic during this festive period, the police department's aim is to increase road safety across the country, which is aimed at preventing accidents and promoting responsible driving behaviours.

Independent study places Belize 9th on a list of highest plastic polluters worldwide
A study conducted by Utility Bidder on plastic waste emissions into the ocean has ranked Belize 9th on the list of countries contributing to this environmental issue. The research revealed that Belize emits 0.96kg of plastic into the sea per capita annually. The study aims to identify which countries contribute the most to plastic pollution. In the previous report, Belize was placed 10th, but in the latest report, there has been no improvement in decreasing the amount of plastic waste generated by Belizeans. The research observed the probability and quantity of plastic waste entering the ocean and the mismanagement of plastic waste.

Rotary contributes towards painting and renewing the New Horizon SDA School bathroom
The Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye is currently involved in a project to paint and repair the New Horizon SDA School. Supplies were ordered in early February, and the work began on March 14th with power washing the bathroom walls to remove excess dirt and old paint.

Regulations on alcohol sales on Good Friday
In December 2022, an amendment was made to the Intoxicating Liquor Licensing Regulation, which allows most establishments to sell alcohol on Good Friday during the Easter weekend starting from March 29th. In San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, the Town Council stated on Tuesday, March 26th, that only Public and General Liquor Licenses (wholesale) holders, including those with Malt licenses (retail), will not be allowed to operate on Good Friday.

Demand for power on Ambergris Caye surpasses capacity
As Ambergris Caye continues to develop, the demand for resources such as electricity is significantly increasing. On Saturday, March 23rd, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) stated that the demand for electricity on the island surpassed the rated capacity of the submarine cable (17 Megawatts) that supplies power from the national grid. This forced BEL to shut down service to parts of northern Ambergris Caye to protect the submarine cable and circuit from damage.
