Mexican outlaws rob Belize Fisheries staff at sea
Belizean authorities are investigating an incident involving a pair of employees from the Belize Fisheries Department (BFD) who were robbed by Mexican pirates on Saturday, July 24th, while monitoring corals at a treatment site. The incident took place at Barracuda Patch within the Conservation Zone 1 of the Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve 22 miles north of San Pedro Town.

San Pedro holds a wake in protest of Laddie Gillett’s unjustified death
Concerned Belizeans across the country are protesting and calling for justice after police corporal Kareem Martinez allegedly shot and killed 14-year-old Laddie Gillett. His life was cut short when the teenager and his family were visiting Placencia in southern Belize on July 14th. Â Â Reports are that Gillett and some friends were running on the beach trying to beat the 10PM curfew when he was killed. The incident has sparked outrage among the Belizean public, and in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye Gillett was remembered with a pass-thru candlelight vigil.

Arrests expected soon for San Pedro’s recent shootings
San Pedro Police continue their investigations into two separate shootings on Saturday, July 10th, and Monday, the 12th. The Honourable Kareem Musa, the minister in charge of police, is optimistic and, during an interview with The San Pedro Sun, said arrests are expected to take place soon.

Second non-fatal shooting within the week on La Isla Bonita
A second shooting incident was reported in San Pedro Town on Monday, July 12th, in the DFC subdivision. One person identified as 25-year-old Joshua Gongora, received gunshot injuries. Â He was transported to the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II, where he was treated and airlifted to Belize City, where he remains stable. Several persons were reportedly detained for questioning, but no reports of charges have been issued as yet.

San Mateo shooting under investigation; victim in stable but critical condition
The police investigation continues in the shooting of 35-year-old Luis Abner Tun, which occurred on Saturday, July 10th, at the Clumsy Restaurant and Bar in the San Mateo Subdivision of San Pedro Town. Tun survived the attack and remains in a stable but critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City. No one has been arrested and charged, and police have not established a motive as to why Tun was shot.

Jasmine Hartin granted bail for Common Assault charge; remanded after Supreme Court bail revoked
For a second time, Canadian national 32-year-old Jasmine Hartin was escorted by San Pedro Police after arraigned at the San Pedro Magistrate Court. This time it was not for the Manslaughter by Negligence charge she received on June 1st for the shooting death of Police Superintendent Henry Jemmott, but for Common Assault. She was granted a $1,000 bail plus one surety of the same but was yet a free woman. The same day Hartin was promptly taken to the Supreme Court in Belize City, where her $30,000 bail for the Manslaughter by Negligence charge was revoked. If she cannot secure another bail bond, she will remain at the Kolbe Foundation-Central Prison in Hattieville until tried.

Supt. Henry Jemmott is laid to rest in his hometown of Dangriga
Henry Jemmott was laid to rest with an official funeral in his hometown of Dangriga, in southern Stann Creek District. Dangriga’s police formation, officers from across the country and Minister of Police Honourable Kareem Musa were in attendance.

Charged with Manslaughter, Jasmine Hartin remanded to Belize Central Prison after shooting death of top cop
After four nights in custody at the San Pedro Police department, tonight, June 1st, island socialite Jasmine Hartin is spending her first night at the Kolbe Foundation - Belize Central Prison. Hartin was remanded for the charge of Manslaughter by Negligence in the shooting death of 42-year-old Superintendent of Police Henry Jemmott. She will remain there awaiting her bail application to the Supreme Court.
