Caye Caulker and San Pedro to Get New Schools in 2026

Area Representative Hon. Andre Perez has announced that new school projects for Caye Caulker and San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, are slated to begin in 2026. Perez shared the update while outlining planned development projects for Belize Rural South at the end of the year.

SPHS Introduces New Visitor Check-In System

San Pedro High School has rolled out a new visitor screening process designed to enhance campus security and improve student attendance tracking. The changes, which began in September and are now fully implemented, require all visitors, including parents and guests, to sign in at the main gate and present identification such as a Social Security card or government-issued ID. The updated protocol was introduced to prevent unauthorized student departures and ensure closer monitoring of attendance.

Participate Learning invites Belizean educators to teach in the U.S.

Belizean educators interested in teaching preschool, elementary, secondary education, or English as a Second Language in the United States can apply through Participate Learning. Applications can be submitted at any time by visiting www.participatelearning.com. Those hoping to begin teaching in the upcoming 2026 school year, which starts in July, are advised to apply by November 30, 2025.

Evening Shift at Holy Cross Expands Access to Education

Holy Cross Anglican School, north of San Pedro Town in the San Mateo area, is set to launch a new evening program on October 20, 2025, designed to meet the needs of children currently left on waiting lists due to overcrowded classrooms. This initiative, known as the Second Chance After-School Program, will offer learning opportunities to up to 40 students in Infant I, Infant II, and Standard I, introducing a shift system approach to provide learning opportunities, pioneering a shift system approach unique to the island’s education landscape.

San Pedro Lions promote mental health awareness at SPHS

On World Mental Health Day, observed on Friday, October 10th, the San Pedro Lions Club hosted an informative program at the San Pedro High School (SPHS) focused on mental health awareness. The event featured motivational speeches and a personal testimony, reminding students that they are not alone in their struggles and encouraging them to seek support. The message emphasized that asking for help is a sign of strength, not a sign of weakness.

Site Visit Conducted on Proposed Location for Three New Island Schools

Area Representative Honorable Andre Perez led a site visit to the location designated for three new schools on northern Ambergris Caye. The proposed site, about seven miles north of downtown San Pedro, has been identified for the construction of a preschool, primary school, and high school. The broader project also includes a preschool and high school in Caye Caulker. Joining the visit were the Minister of Education, Honorable Oscar Requena, and Cabinet colleagues Honourable Ramon Cervantes and Honorable Oscar Mira.
