San Pedro Pirates road to PLB championship comes to an end

With a 3-1 loss against the Belmopan Bandits on the second round of the Premiere League of Belize (PLB) on Saturday, November 25th the San Pedro Pirates Football Club hopes for a first-year championship came to an end. The Pirates are the island’s first semi-professional football club and over the season overcame many odds to land in the semi-finals. Managing to squeak by one goal aggregate, the Pirates certainly proved that determination can take you places.
The match began at 8PM, with only three minutes into the game, the Bandits Georgie Welcome scored the first goal for his team. The game continued with crosses and passes, with both teams trying to score more goals. It wasn’t until minute 34 that Bandits Georgie Welcome found his way once again and netted another goal for his team. The Pirates Jesse Smith responded with a goal for the island team, at minute 47. The first half came to an end with the home team leading 2-1.
With just a few minutes into the second half, the Belmopan Bandits netted another goal courtesy of Jerome Smith. The game continued with many attempts by both teams striving for more goals. When the long -waited whistle was blown, the victory went to the Belmopan Bandits with a final score of 3-1.
The Pirates owner Emeliano Rivero said, “To be the first time participating, I think we pulled off a good play as we were able to make it to the semi-finals. I want to thank the entire community of Ambergris Caye for all the support they gave us, and to continue to support us as we will be participating in the upcoming new season of the PLB.” He also stated that the team will be having new players for the upcoming season.
The San Pedro Pirates will be playing their first match of the new season of the PLB on January 12, 2018 against the Police United Football Club. The game is scheduled to start at 8pm at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro Town. All Islanders are invited to come out and support the island team.
