New Police Sub-Station opens in northern Ambergris Caye

The San Pedro Police Formation has expanded its reach to northern Ambergris Caye with the official opening of a sub-station. The new police building officially opened on Wednesday, February 8th, some 10 miles north of San Pedro Town. It will serve as the base for tourism police and operational units.

Police officers arraigned for Derrick Uh’s death released on bail

n Thursday, August 18th, four police officers accused of being responsible for the death of 20-year-old Derrick Uh were prosecuted for the charge of Manslaughter at the Corozal Magistrate Court in northern Belize. The four officers include Inspector Isaias Sanchez, Sergeant Rosario Romerio, and PCs Errol Peralta and Alrick Borland.

Six police officers investigated in the death of Derrick Uh; could face criminal charges

It was confirmed on Tuesday, August 16th by the Minister of Home Affairs, the Honourable Kareem Musa, that six police officers are being investigated for the tragic death of 20-year-old Derrick Uh while in police custody. Uh was left locked up inside a police van for over 12 hours. The police officers allegedly forgot Uh was inside the van. He was found dead inside the vehicle on Sunday afternoon.

Marijuana referendum postponement may extend due to banking concerns

The postponement of the marijuana referendum on whether to legalize the production and sale of this drug may take a bit longer due to the threat of losing affiliated financial institutions in the United States of America (USA). The banking sector in Belize may present a roadblock to the Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Control and Licensing Bill 2022, which has already been passed in the National Assembly.

Former San Pedro Pirates’ John Kings’ death mourned by sports and music community nationwide

The shooting death of former footballer and artist John King, 28, in Belize City, was felt deeply countrywide, especially in San Pedro Town. King played with the San Pedro Pirates Football Club and was one of their best offensive mid-fielders. He was also passionate about music, and after leaving the island, he ventured into this field, where he produced several recordings that can be viewed on YouTube.

Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries and team visits the island police formations

The police formations of Caye Caulker and San Pedro Town were visited by the Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, the Honourable Kareem Musa. The trip to the Cayes is part of his countrywide national familiarization tour with the different police formations and officers. Musa was accompanied by his Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kevin Arthurs, Area Representative the Honourable Andre Perez, the Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado, Superintendents Clement Cacho and Christopher Noble, including the President of the Belize Police Department, Sergeant Jermaine Hyde.

New COVID-19 variant detected in Belize; government introduces new regulations

The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) confirmed on Wednesday, June 30th, that a variant of the COVID-19 virus had been detected in Belize. Several samples have been sent to Baylor University in Texas, USA, to conduct gene sequencing and determine which variant is in the country. New measures to contain the sharp increase in infections were also announced and will go into effect on Sunday, July 4th.

Both Minister and Commissioner of Police weigh in on reports of San Pedro officers questionable conduct

Over the past weeks, there have been several reports accusing police officers in San Pedro Town of abusive behavior. From a post on Trip Advisor claiming officers extorted tourists to reported shakedowns of newly opened businesses, the only event that prompted a response from the police top brass, including its minister in charge, was an incident involving Belizean Instagram model Joyjah Estrada.
