Postmortem rules Selvin Sealy’s death as homicide, family demands answers
On Saturday, May 17th, Selvin Sealy Jr., 32, was laid to rest in San Pedro Town. The island resident died in police custody after he was apprehended for trespassing on private property south of San Pedro earlier in the week. While family members are questioning the circumstances surrounding his death, police on the island say the matter is under investigation, and a file has been submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further advice.

Illegal ammunition recovered in northern Ambergris Caye
A total of 72 live rounds of ammunition were discovered in northern San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, on Tuesday, February 11th, during a joint operation conducted by a special operations team and various units on the island. The ammunition was found in an AK-47 magazine containing twelve 7.62mm live rounds, a red box holding twenty-three 5.56mm live rounds, and a 60-round magazine containing thirty-seven 5.56mm live rounds. At the time of the findings, no individuals were present in the area.

Coleman’s Barbershop robbed at gunpoint: Owner sustains injuries
On the night of Monday, September 9th, Roderick Coleman, a well-known island barber from the San Juan Area, was injured during an armed burglary. According to a police report, around 10PM, three unidentified men entered Coleman’s Barbershop, shooting Coleman in the leg and robbing clients at the establishment. Coleman was transported to Ambergris Hope Hospital and later airlifted to Belize City for further medical treatment. Fortunately, the injuries were not life-threatening, and the victim is expected to make a full recovery.

Despite ComPol’s statement, there is no warrant for police brutality victim Ryan Melendez
Island resident Ryan Melendez, who was pistol-whipped by Sergeant Devon Makin weeks ago, was at the San Pedro Police Station on Monday, July 15th, accompanied by his attorney David McKoy, following reports that the police wanted him. Melendez was informed that he was not wanted by the police and walked out of the station without charge. McKoy said the family plans to sue the Belize Police Department, particularly the Commissioner of Police, for defamation.

Noise Regulations in San Pedro: What are the rules, and who enforces the law?
Several island residents have expressed discontent with the excessive noise affecting their neighborhoods. Whether it is blaring music from entertainment events or another type of loud noise, it appears that next to traffic, noise pollution is one of the biggest complaints on the island. The San Pedro Liquor Licensing Board is responsible for issuing liquor licenses and extensions for recreational events after hours. As per the law, sound levels must not exceed 70 decibels, a unit used to measure the relative loudness of sounds.

Island resident Jose Adalberto Ventura found dead; no foul play suspected
On Wednesday, February 14th, the lifeless body of a male person was found floating in the sea south of San Pedro Town. The deceased was identified as 43-year-old Jose Adalberto Ventura of the San Pablo Subdivision. The unfortunate incident labeled by police as sudden death is being investigated as ‘An Apparent Drowning’ as no foul play is suspected.

San Pedro Vounteer Special Constables hosts monthly meeting and receive new uniforms
As San Pedro Town expands, the island police formation’s responsibility to man the country’s leading tourism destination also grows. To balance its workforce, the local police force functions along with additional police constables. Some of these are islanders with regular day-to-day jobs. However, they remain on standby and ready to assist when needed. At a meeting on Thursday, November 30th, select members were commended for their service and presented with new uniform shirts by the chief and deputy commanders of the San Pedro Police Station.

Christian Espat, person of interest in Morales murder, hands himself over to Police
Just after 2PM, on Tuesday, May 30th, Christian Espat walked into the San Pedro Police Station and handed himself over to the authorities after hearing he was a person of interest in the murder of his ex-partner Mirza Morales. Espat was accompanied by his common-law wife, parents, and an attorney. He stated that he handed himself in in an effort to clear his name, as he had nothing to do with Morales’ execution.
