GOB Receives Disbursement under the 2023 Bilateral Cooperation Grant from the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan)

Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, has received a grant from the Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), H. E. Lily Li-Wen Hsu, in the amount of US$3 million. This represents the remaining disbursement under the 2023 Bilateral Cooperation Program between both countries.

Income tax exemption threshold is now set to $29,000

As of January 1, 2025, a new income tax exemption threshold was implemented, raising the threshold from $26,000 to $29,000. This change means that workers earning less than $29,000 annually will no longer be required to pay income tax. As a result, over 3000 employees earning below this limit will benefit from making income tax payments, which is a significant advantage for those within this income.

New World Screwworm: A Potential Threat to Belize’s Livestock Industry

Belize is facing a new issue with New World Screwworm (NWS). The NWS is a highly destructive parasite primarily targeting livestock and other animals. The first case was identified on December 30, 2024, in the Crique Sarco Village Toledo District, followed by another case reported in early January 2025 in the San Pedro Columbia Village. In response, officials have implemented strict measures, including a quarantine zone of three miles around the affected farms, and special permits are now required to move cattle.

Police searching for a man accused of brutally kidnapping his wife in San Pedro

The police are searching for Kenny Brakeman, who is accused of attacking and kidnapping his ex-wife, Sabela Brakeman, early on Saturday, November 16th. He was last seen in Caye Caulker Village and is now believed to be on the mainland. Sabela was severely injured during the attack and will need to undergo surgery to fully recover. She is seeking the assistance of the public and anyone willing and able can reach out to her sister at telephone number 665-5083.

No charges in shooting death of Matthew Moses

Matthew Jonathan Moses, a 46-year-old resident of the island, was shot and killed in northern Ambergris Caye on November 8th. According to the police, they received reports about the incident, which is believed to have resulted from a disagreement between Moses and a property caretaker. It was alleged that Moses was acting aggressively toward the caretaker when he was shot. The police detained the property caretaker, who holds a licensed firearm, but he was later released. Authorities await instructions from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) before levying charges.

Fishermen attacked; boat set on fire in northern Ambergris Caye

An incident occurred on Wednesday, July 31st, in northern Ambergris Caye, where two fishermen were attacked and their boat set on fire. One of the fishermen, Eliezer Aldana reported that he and another colleague were fired upon by a group of individuals in another boat but were not injured. The police have launched an investigation and are searching for the suspects involved in the attack.

Sharks FC are the Island League Champions

The Island League Football Tournament crowned a new champion at the Ambergris Stadium on Saturday, January 11th. The final match of the local tournament had both teams and their fans on edge, as the regulation 90 minutes were not enough to determine a winner. It took an additional 30 minutes of overtime and penalty kicks for Sharks FC to secure a hard-fought victory over Sea Bulls FC.

Newly renovated basketball court opens at Boca del Rio Beach Park

The basketball court at Boca del Rio Beach Park has been fully renovated, thanks to a partnership between Will Mitchell, RE/MAX Belize Real Estate, and the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC). This project has provided the island's sporting community with a brand-new basketball court, complete with new rims and bleachers, creating a safe and engaging environment for the island's youth.

San Pedro welcomes 2025 with a big celebration on the beach

Residents and visitors of the island gathered at the central park in downtown San Pedro to bid farewell to 2024 and welcome the new year. The New Year’s festivities occurred on Tuesday, December 31st, and included an extravagant celebration organized by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC). The event featured live performances, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display by the beach.
